Azan is an actor and poet based in North West London. He has been writing and performing poetry since 2019 and so far, his work explores the navigation of cultural identity through lenses of migration, faith and masculinity. He’s interested in reclamation and exploring the fractured to gain a better understanding of the whole. Currently, this means investigating the relationship between Britain and British Muslim men – the good and the bad. Basically, he wants people to know how wonderful it is to be brown/Muslim despite the baggage. As an actor, he studied English & Drama at Royal Holloway and trained with the Almeida Young Company. He is now rehearsing for Jack Absolute Flies Again at the National Theatre.

Azan is represented by Christina Shepherd at The Artists Partnership.

Why Khameleon?

What excites me about Khameleon is how brave they are. That word ‘brave’ is thrown around a lot with few being worthy of the title, but not this company. What makes Khameleon brave for me is their scope – mixing music, poetry and movement through theatre while keeping intersectionality at the core. Most places shy away from encouraging multiple perspectives in fear of getting something wrong, but it’s really refreshing to work with a team that understands the risk but is willing to give it a go, to push the boundaries of how things have been done. As an artist, it’s incredibly freeing to bring your whole self to a project and then figure out how it best serves the piece, without diluting yourself. Khameleon has and continues to encourage this attitude, which is a win in my books.
